Buckeye Daily – Safety Competition Heats Up

SAFETY COMPETITION HEATS UP; BACKUP QBs BATTLE; WRs CLARK, BROWN LIGHT UP CAMP VIDEO

By Jim Baird | AM Football Briefing | Friday, August 12

SAFETY COMPETITION HEATS UP: Gone to the NFL are Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell. Who will replace them at safety? It’s one of camps most intriguing competitions. Damon Webb and spring game star Malik Hooker are currently running with the No. 1s. On their heels are a now 100% healthy Erick Smith and Cam Burrows. Co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano sheds light on where the competition stands, Tim Shoemaker with the story. Hooker is confident there won’t be a drop off in talent this year, Tim May talks to Hooker, Webb, and Smith. Cam Burrows is the healthiest he’s felt in two years, David Jablonski interviews him here. Erick Smith is back in form too after rehabbing from a torn ACL, Gerdeman with the story.

BACKUP QBs BATTLE: Unlike last year, there is zero QB controversy leading into the opener: JT’s name is carved in stone as the No. 1. But what about No. 2? Redshirt freshman and former Ohio Mr. Football Joe Burrow impressed in the spring game going 14 for 23 for 196 and 3 TDs. Camp welcomes the arrival of highly touted four-star Dwayne Haskins. QB coach Tim Beck is pleased with Burrow’s development- he’s having a good camp, while the true freshman Haskins is facing the usual big learning curve of transitioning to the college level. Ari Wasserman with more.
